Home Theater and Music Room Project
Our latest design project is a dedicated music listening room and a home theatre room. Since both rooms are on the lower level of a residence, there was a strong requirement for sound isolation between the rooms and the living spaces above them.
This was accomplished with some of the same acoustic design techniques used in a recording studio such as:
A ceiling consisting of dual layers of gypsum suspended from springs. The stiffness and mass of gypsum and the spring provides a low natural frequency of vibration around 2 Hz which acts as an absorber. This design provided for a very high STC value.
A double wall with an air gap between the listening room and the home theatre room provided a high wall STC.
Use of putty pads for all outlets in the walls.
No penetrations in the ceiling, lighting provided in soffits.
Use of dedicated HVAC Split system to keep sound out of the existing duct work.
Heavy use of acoustic caulk to seal all gaps.
Low RT60 time with use of absorption material built into walls covered with fabric wall.
